2009-2010 Season

Our First Season            see Current Season            see 2010-2011 Season

Two original plays, one new musical, and a variety show — quite an inaugural season!  But we are nothing if not ambitious.  Take a look at our first season's offerings:  Burned asked us to imagine what it would be like to survive a disaster that leads to the collapse of civilization.  Spiked!, our holiday-themed variety show, was a delightful seasonal romp, chock-full of sketch comedy, original songs, and improv.  (Watch for Spiked Too!, coming in December of 2011!)  Spring of Freedom, Summer of Fear followed the journey of a young boy caught up in the Iranian Revolution, which pitted neighbor against neighbor.  Finally an original musical:  Love After Hours (book and lyrics by Jim Robinson; music by Dennis Curley), was a self-described "absurdist revue" that plumbed the depths of the romantic heart.

Thanks to all who spent a little time with Table Salt during our first season.  For those of you who are new to us, be sure to sign up to be on our e-mail list, and we'll see you at the theater!

The Shows

Burned

Both funny and disturbing, this new play follows the characters Hannah and John, two office co-workers who survive "the big one."  John was once just Hannah's office crush, but now she is injured and completely dependent on his goodwill.

Their partnership fails to grow in this new world of ash, and Hannah eventually leaves — in her words, "to die with a nicer group of people."  Hannah not only finds a nicer group of people, she becomes their leader.  This cozy community is threatened when John limps back into the picture.

Spring of Freedom, Summer of Fear

This haunting new play by Twin Cities playwright Ali G. Ravi brings the hopes, chaos, and betrayals of the 1979 Iranian Revolution into one family's living room.  On a warm summer night in Tehran, shortly after the advent of the Islamic Republic, a young boy's family is confronted by the harsh realities of a changed Iran while the followers of the new regime question their loyalties.  At first just a witness to the drama surrounding him, the young boy is soon required to summon the bravery that might save his family from these explosive circumstances.

Love After Hours

Love After Hours, a brand new musical comedy, is coming to Saint Paul!  With music by Dennis Curley and book and lyrics by Jim Robinson, this new show looks at love from angles best described as "slightly askew."

What happens when the regular performance is over, but the audience demands more from the club singers?  The singers get to tell the story their own way.  Join dramatic Mary Lane, ebullient Kissie, and femme fatale Jan as they explore the truth about love and all its foibles, and eventually find that the real experience transcends their individual failings and defies explanation.  The hilarious and touching vignettes span a whole range of experiences:  One singer begs her boyfriend to break up with her so she doesn't have to be the bad guy ("Please Meet Someone New"); another describes how she stumbled unwittingly into a ménage-à-trois ("I Should Have Said No"); "Too Clever By Half" recounts the perils of dating an overly cerebral man.  There's something for everyone in this delightful collection of songs and stories!
